With plenty of seating options, I took a table where I could keep track of the conversation at the other tables. The talk was mostly about politics, and clearly they didn’t approve of President Obama’s recent actions. I fully expected to hear a racial reference. I was pleasantly surprised when I didn’t. A few people came in to get carry-out food. The waitresses greeted everyone who entered with friendly inquiries about family members.

One man, evidently the owner, announced that when he took over the business in 1959, things were different: “That’s back when we did some business around here. We didn’t close early; we had a big dinner crowd. We were open seven days a week and only closed on Christmas Day. Now, shoot, we close at three and lunch really ain’t all that much. Now, those were good times.” His dining partner replied, “I’m not as old as you. I’m only seventy-five. I don’t remember those kind of good times.”

I got up to leave and left $15.00 on the table for an $8.00 lunch. When I had sat down, the waitress had come by the table with a menu and asked, “What can I get you to drink, hon?” She won the bet.
